You should probably have them. I didn't, and now my blog content is gone. It didn't take much. A TrueNAS CORE upgrade wrecked my LSI 2008 SAS controller.
Drives phased in and out of connectivity, which caused all sorts of weird problems, including data corruption.
I have recovered the drives, and the important things are backed up. Unfortunately, I guess I never got around to off-host backups of the wordpress instance. It had an IO error that caused the entire zpool to completely wedge. I could not fsck it, and bring it back from the grave.
So the lesson from the Rambling Homelabist? Do your backups first, before you go live.
